Inspect the boom foot, arm, bucket linkage, blade mounts, and upper-frame welds. Hairline cracks around high-stress areas deserve photographs and an independent opinion. Check the slew or swing bearing for excessive play by positioning the machine correctly and applying controlled pressure. Repeated clunking during direction changes can indicate wear that will not show up in a basic walkaround.
Cab condition also affects productivity. A broken seat suspension, missing glass, or failed air conditioning can turn a summer shift in Arizona into a fatigue problem. Replacing a seat or window is measurable money; losing an operator to heat and discomfort costs more because production stops.

New versus used ownership costs
New equipment brings warranty coverage, predictable financing, and fewer unknowns. It also brings depreciation, delivery charges, setup costs, and attachment expenses. A new Komatsu mini excavator may make sense when utilization is high enough to justify reliable availability and the business needs a clean payment schedule.
Used equipment wins when the inspection is disciplined. Look for service intervals, hydraulic oil changes, filter part numbers, hour-meter consistency, and evidence of dealer or fleet maintenance. Compare recorded hours with pedal wear, seat condition, track wear, and paint damage. A very low-hour machine with heavily worn controls deserves more questions, not automatic trust.
Build a simple ownership estimate before making an offer. Add purchase price, delivery, trailer modifications, insurance, scheduled maintenance, fuel, attachments, and a repair reserve. For an older unit, reserving $3,000 to $8,000 for first-year repairs is not pessimism; it is a way to keep one hose failure from disrupting payroll. A practical inspection and buying sequence
First, define the job and minimum lift, depth, width, and attachment requirements. Second, collect the serial number and request service records before traveling to inspect the machine. Third, inspect the structure and undercarriage with the machine cold. Fourth, operate every function cold, then repeat the test after the hydraulic oil is warm. Fifth, take oil samples from the engine, hydraulic system, and final drives when practical. Lab results do not predict every failure, but abnormal metal or contamination can change a purchase decision.
For a Komatsu mini excavator at auction, set a hard maximum price before the bidding starts. Include buyer fees, transport, taxes, and immediate repairs. For a dealer machine, ask for a written condition report and clarify what warranty actually covers. Do not let a fresh coat of paint or a low hour meter replace a pressure test and fluid inspection.
